The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Brier Creek Elementary School provides vital funding to our Title I public school. The PTA is made up of a group of parents volunteering to support and improve BCES for our students, teachers, and families. Last year our fundraising efforts enabled numerous enhancements including the purchase of 700+ new library books, smart boards for the classrooms, recess equipment for each class, a new water fountain, and a fridge for the break room. We hosted monthly teacher appreciation events including catered meals, snack breaks, and complimentary neck massages.

While we have a phenomenal principal and strong family engagement, Brier Creek is a Title I elementary school; funding is tight. Research consistently shows that money, when spent equitably and effectively on key school resources, improves student outcomes and closes achievement and opportunity gaps. The PTA is the key fundraising mechanism for our neighborhood school.

We would like to spend more money on printing to promote our events and fundraising campaigns but that cuts into funds needed for critical school improvements. This year we want to try some new print strategies:
We need our fundraising dollars to go toward direct costs of much-needed school upgrades including furniture for the library and a new laminator for the front office and all teachers to utilize.
We also need it for field trip support. Our fifth grade field trip used to include an overnight stay in Washington DC with chartered bus transportation both ways and exposure to unmatched history in the nation’s capital. With rising transportation and hotel costs, many families face a financial burden when considering the cost/student to participate in the field trip ($300+/student). Last year the fifth grade field trip was a one-day experience within NC and did not include an overnight stay. The PTA has a goal to fundraise for fifth grade field trip scholarships in order to offer a bigger experience for the students.
A print grant would greatly improve our ability to fundraise through broad and effective communications – ultimately enabling us to provide a better experience for our students, staff and families at Brier Creek Elementary School. Public funding – federal, state and county – for public schools is even lower this year, and the downward trend doesn’t show any signs of turning back up. Funding from our PTA is even more important now.
